Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. She studied secondary education over her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. The hope was to become an English high school teacher. The dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, was cut short after she dropped out of school. Her career began by performing live poems and writing her own material. She eventually joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by them. Then, during Roots performance, she revealed herself as an artist. Following that, she started working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. While on the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She was the very first artist to sign by Hidden Beach Recordings.
